Insurance discrimination is against the law in Minnesota.

Insurance must treat mental health and substance use
just like any other medical need.

It's simple. Anything else is discrimination. And it's illegal.
You can do something about it. Know your rights.

If you think your insurance is treating your mental illness or substance use disorder claims differently, report it. It matters.

What does "parity" mean?
Simply, parity means equality. Insurance coverage for mental health medications, services, and substance use disorder treatment must not be harder to get than other medical claims. Getting treatment must not take longer than other medical services.

Who can help?
It depends on the kind of insurance you have, so the good folks at the Minnesota Department of Commerce have made it easier. They will help you figure that part out so you can focus on the important parts - standing up for your rights - standing up for justice.

Examples...
You have the same rights to mental health or substance use treatment care treatments and medications as any other specialty care.

What can I do?
If you feel you have experienced mental health or substance use disorder discrimination, tell us about it. Complain. Today.

We must break the silence and bring transparency to a system that oppresses those with mental health and substance use disorders.
— Former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy
